The No. 6 USC women's swimming and diving team finished second in the 200y medley relay with a school record and finished a close third in a season-best 800y free relay to get off to strong on the first day of the 2011 Pac-10 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday (Feb. 23) at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
After two relays, USC is tied for second with Stanford with 110 points with Cal in first (128). UCLA is fourth (102), Washington State and Oregon State tied for fifth (94), Arizona seventh (52) and Arizona State eighth (48).
USC's 200y medley relay quartet of senior Presley Bard, freshman Kasey Carlson, senior Lyndsay DePaul and sophomore Christel Simms touched second in 1:37.11, erasing the school record (1:37.31) that Troy set in December with the same unit. Cal won the race in 1:35.62. Both times were NCAA `A' cuts. USC was fourth in the event last year.
Junior Katinka Hosszu broke Bard's record in the 200y free as she led off USC's 800y free relay that ultimately finished in 7:03.00, its best effort this season. Behind Hosszu were junior Amanda Smith, freshman Stina Gardell and sophomore Haley Anderson. Cal won the race in 7:00.75 while Stanford edged USC for second in 7:02.19. Hosszu's time puts her among the top 5 in the country this year.
Meanwhile, in the 2011 Men's and Women's Pac-10 Diving Championships being held concurrently with the swimming competition, junior Harrison Jones successfully defended his title in the 1-meter springboard. Senior teammate Steven Starks was fourth his ninth top 8 finish at Pac-10s in 10 events.
The meet continues Thursday through Saturday (Feb. 25-27). Prelims begin at 11 a.m. with finals starting at 6 p.m.
