LOS ANGELES-- After landing its highest ranked recruiting class in the last 10 years, USC baseball welcomes its recruiting class for the 2012 season.
The 19-man recruiting class comprises 12 position players and seven pitchers. The class includes six players who were drafted in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft and two undrafted players were high school All-Americans.
The 2011 MLB draftees in the new crop of Trojans include, Stephen Tarpley (8th round/Cleveland Indians), Ryan Garvey (15th round/Philadelphia Phillies), Wyatt Strahan (27th round/Arizona Diamondbacks), Trent Boras (30th round/Milwuakee Brewers) and Dante Flores (41st round/San Diego Padres).
Senior right hand pitcher transfer Martin Viramontes (LMU) is a two-time draftee (11th round in 2007/ Los Angeles Angeles, 27th round in 2010/ New York Yankees). Kevin Chambers, a senior first baseman from Oklahoma State was drafted in 2009 (47th round/Detroit Tigers).
"We are very excited about our incoming class of players," said USC head coach Frank Cruz. "This is a strong class with an exciting mix of young and veteran players. Possibly our biggest recruit is the return of Andrew Triggs to our starting rotation after passing on the draft ( 21st round/San Francisco Giants ) and coming back to work on his master's degree. Along with the return of OF, Garrett Houts, who hit .324 for us last year in conference play, and the addition of Viramontes, we have a solid core of maturity and leadership on our team."
"There is a lot of talent in this recruiting class with a good balance of pitching and offense. We are obviously very excited when this many drafted players come to school."
