Freshman Doris Chen carded a 4-under 67 in her debut round as a Trojan to lead USC to sixth place after the first round of the 2011 Stanford Intercollegiate on Friday (Oct. 14) at the Stanford (Calif.) Golf Course.
USC, competing in its second of three fall events, finished the first round at par 284, seven strokes back of leaders UCLA and Washington (277). Vanderbilt was third (281) with Oregon and Stanford tied for fourth (282).
The Trojans, who have finished in the NCAA top 5 six years in a row and in seven of the past nine seasons, won four events last year and are after their first of the 2011-12 season.
Leading the charge this weekend, so far at least, is Chen, whose first round included birdies on 3, 7, 10 and 12 with pars on the other 14 holes. She is tied for fourth with three others, two strokes back of leader Marina Alex of Vanderbilt.
Seniors Lisa McCloskey and Inah Park tied for 34th at 1-over 72. McCloskey had two birdies in her round while Park had four.
Sophomores Sophia Popov and Rachel Morris tied for 43rd at 2-over 73. Popov, who had three titles last year en route to NGCA Freshman of the Year honors, started slow Friday and was 3-over after six holes but finished 1-under the rest of the way. Morris was 2-over after five holes but finished at par over the final 13 holes.
Freshman Kristen Park, playing as an individual whose results don't count toward the team score, is tied for 13th at 1-under 70. She birdied 1 and 6 before falling to par after nine holes. She dropped to 1-over before getting birdies on 16 and 17.
Action continues Saturday, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
