IRVINE, CALIF. -- The No. 4 USC men's water polo team introduced several new faces to the collegiate water polo world today as the Trojans opened 2010 competition at the UCI Invitational. In this morning's season opener in Irvine, Calif., USC topped Redlands 23-3 on the hands of 12 different players, including five playing in their first official game as Trojans.
Michael Rosenthal led all with four goals, and junior Peter Kurzeka tallied three to go along with Stephen Siri's hat trick to kick off the redshirt freshman's Trojan career. Also in their first USC action, Tobias Preuss and Mace Rapsey each added a pair, with fellow newcomers Nikola Vavic and Rex Butler also getting in on the scoring action as USC piled up 23 goals against Redlands. Redshirt sophomore Andrew Reego also notched his first goal as a Trojan today in joining the group of 12 USC scorers on the day.
Defensively, only three Redlands goals got through in the game. Joel Dennerley opened up the day in the cage collecting a save as USC built up a 6-2 lead in the first period and went up 11-3 by halftime. Will Simon stepped into goal for the second half to pin up four more saves as the USC defense silence Redlands. While the USC defense shut things down on one end, USC plugged in three goals in the third and amassed nine more in the four to round out the 23-3 win for the Trojans.
