MALIBU, CALIF. - The No. 1 USC men's water polo team made a statement to start off conference competition today, taking down No. 9 host Pepperdine 13-4 in the teams' first MPSF match of the year. Behind hat tricks from Michael Rosenthal and Nikola Vavic and a defense that turned away eight Waves power plays, the Trojans rolled to their 11th straight win. USC goes to 11-0 in taking a 1-0 start to MPSF play, while Pepperdine moves to 5-5, 0-1.
With a 5-0 shutout performance in the first frame, USC powered ahead 8-1 by halftime. The Trojans would balloon that lead to 13-3 with four minutes remaining. The Waves would tally one more goal in that span to wrap up a USC-dominated game as a 13-4 Trojans victory.
Joining Rosenthal and Vavic with multiple-goal outings on the day were Jeremy Davie and Tobias Preuss. Joel Dennerley served full time in the cage today and picked up five saves to anchor the stubborn Trojan defense.
USC's next competition takes the Trojans to the SoCal Tournament next weekend. The winners of last weekend's NorCal Tournament enter the SoCal tourney as the top seed. Competition runs Oct. 2-3 in Irvine, Calif.
