No. 4 USC 5th After Pac-10 Championships 2nd Round
April 20, 2010 | Women's Golf
(updated version)
Sophomore Jennifer Song is tied for sixth but No. 4 USC is in fifth after the second round of the 2010 Pac-10 Women's Golf Championships at the Eugene (Ore.) C.C. on Tuesday (April 20).
The Trojans appeared to be in the hunt for their second conference crown in the last three years after Tuesday's play. But senior Belen Mozo's second-round 75 - USC's low of the day -- was disqualified for a rules violation and USC dropped into fifth place.
USC is at 26-over 602 (284-318), 15 strokes back of first-place UCLA and second-ranked UCLA. Prior to Mozo's disqualification (Tuesday's round only), the Trojans were seven strokes behind the Bruins. Five golfers play for each team and the top four scores count toward the team total. Losing Mozo's 75 forced USC to use junior Lizette Salas' uncharacteristic 83.
No. 8 Arizona is in second (590), No. 17 California is third (592) and Oregon moved into fourth at 599 ahead of USC. Washington is sixth (610), No. 13 Stanford seventh (617), Oregon State eighth (646) and Washington State ninth (647). Top-ranked Arizona State was disqualified from the event after losing two of its five golfers to a severe illness. Teams need four players to complete a round.
Song is tied for sixth at 2-over 146 (70-76). She bogeyed four of the first five holes but leveled off after that, finishing the final 13 holes at par. Mozo had been tied for eighth at 3-over 147 (72-75) before being disqualified. She is eligible to play on Wednesday. Salas is tied for 22nd at 8-over 152 (69-83), freshman Cyna Rodriguez is tied for 25th at 9-over 153 (73-80) and senior Caroline Kim is tied for 28th at 11-over 155 (76-79). Kim and Rodriguez were a combined 14-over on the front 9, but rallied to combine for 1-over on the back 9.
The final round begins Wednesday at 8 a.m. USC is paired with Washington.
