USC senior cross country runner Zsofia Erdelyi placed 49th at the NCAA West Regional on Saturday (Nov. 13) in the 6K race held at the Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Ore.
Erdelyi posted a time of 21:10.97 in what figures to be her last cross country race as a Trojan. The final announcements for NCAA Championship at-large qualifiers will be on Nov. 14, but it was figured that she would have to finish in the top 20-25 runners to advance.
On Oct. 30 at the Pac-10 Championships, Erdelyi placed 14th with a time of 20:30.37 with just 18 seconds separating her from fifth place.
Still, Erdelyi had an outstanding cross country career at USC winning five individual meet races and setting the school 5K cross country record. She also advanced to the NCAA Championships as a sophomore and was USC's top runner at the Pac-10 Championships and NCAA West Regional in her last three seasons.
The good news is that track season is just around the corner and that is where Erdelyi has really shined, setting school standards in the 3000m steeplechase, the 5000m and the 10000m races.
"Zsofia didn't have one of her better races on Saturday," said USC cross country coach Tom Walsh. "She is really a unique person that has a passion for track and had never run cross country before coming here. She always was and will be a track runner and I really lok forward to her upcoming season. If that race on Saturday was on a track I really believe she would have finished in the top five."
