PALO ALTO, CALIF. -- The top-ranked USC men's water polo team suffered its first loss of the year with a rare slow offensive outing against No. 6 Stanford. The host Cardinal emerged with the upset 5-3 win over the Trojans at Avery Aquatic Complex on Saturday to snap USC's 15-game winning streak. USC is now 15-1 overall and 1-1 in MPSF play.
Shut out in the first frame, USC fell behind 2-0 and was trailing 3-1 at halftime. Another troublesome period of play saw the Trojans in a 4-1 hole entering the final period of play. USC could not overcome that deficit, and wound up with the upset loss. Mace Rapsey tallied two goals to lead the Trojans, and Nikola Vavic also scored for USC in the loss.
The Trojans now return home to McDonald's Swim Stadium to face California next week in an MPSF clash in L.A. at 10 a.m. on Saturday (Oct. 16).
