Trojans Travel To Represent USA
July 01, 2009 | Men's Water Polo
July 1, 2009
Trojan water polo players past and present will be representing the United States in international water polo action this month. All NCAA Champions from one of the two latest USC national championship teams, the Trojans are lined up on rosters for the 2009 World Championships in Rome and for the 2009 World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia, in July.
Cutino Award winner J.W. Krumpholz will rejoin many of his fellow Olympic silver medalists on Team USA's trip to Rome for the World Championships. Krumpholz is on his way into his senior season at USC, making him the only current collegiate athlete on this U.S. Men's National Team roster. He was the Trojans' leading scorer in 2008, helping lift USC to its fourth NCAA Championship and picking up MPSF and National Player of the Year honors as well as collegiate water polo's highest honor with the Peter J. Cutino Award. A 2008 Olympian, Krumpholz will be making his second World Championship appearance with the United States, having also traveled to the 2005 World Championships in Montreal.
Serving as an assistant coach for the U.S. National Team is former Trojan Robert Lynn, who coached at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and also played in the 2000 Olympic Games with Team USA.
The United States opens its 2009 World Championships with a game against host Italy on July 20, followed by the continuation of group play with games against Macedonia and Romania. The World Championships run July 20-31 in Rome.
On the USA's World University Games roster are two 2005 national champions and two 2008 national champions from Troy. 2006 graduate Thomas Hale actually holds two NCAA titles from his Trojan playing career, won as a freshman in 2003 and another in 2005. Hale is joined by fellow 2005 champ and Trojan grad Tommy Corcoran (2007) and current Trojan seniors Shea Buckner and Matt Sagehorn, who won the 2008 title as juniors.
The 2009 World University Games will begin on July 2 in Serbia. The USA squad is bracketed with Japan, Poland and Hungary in Group D.
