Not only is this year's FINA Junior World Championships taking place on U.S. soil, the pool will also be stocked with familiar faces. Six members of the USC men's water polo team are competing for the U.S. Junior National Team, which hosts this year's worlds in Los Alamitos and Long Beach, Calif. from Aug. 18-26. Starring for Team USA from the Trojan lineup are junior Arjan Ligtenberg and sophomore Anthony Artukovich, J.W. Krumpholz, Justin Rappel, Matt Sagehorn and Nico Sardo. The United States opens competition on Aug. 18 against Jamaica at 7 p.m. at the USA Water Polo National Training Center in Los Alamitos. All of the USA's group play matches are set for 7 p.m. at the Los Alamitos pool.
Ligtenberg, Artukovich, Krumpholz, Rappel Sagehorn and Sardo have spent the bulk of the summer training and competing with the Junior National Team. The six Trojans posted a strong performance in Europe earlier this month, placing second at the Low Tatras Cup in Slovakia and fourth in a Len Tournament in Zagreb, Croatia. Sagehorn was the second leading scorer across the two tournaments, scoring 15 goals, followed closely by Krumpholz with 13 goals on the trip.
All six Trojans also competed with the Junior National Team last summer at the 2006 Junior Pan American Games.
This weekend, the Trojans cap back up for Team USA to join a 24-country tournament field at the FINA Junior World Championships. The U.S. team's group play schedule is below:
