Lindsey Nelson Set For Pac-10 Singles Title Match

OJAI, CALIF. - Even recent history repeats itself. USC's #9 Lindsey Nelson and Cal's #4 Susie Babos have clashed three times in the past year. On Sunday at the Pac-10 Women's Singles Championships, the pair will meet again on Sunday (April 29) in the title match at 9:30 a.m. in Ojai, Calif.
Babos claimed the 2006 NCAA Singles Championship with a win over Nelson, and then the pair split victories during dual match action this season, with Nelson claiming the latest win in a three-setter over Babos just two weeks ago. This time on Sunday, the rights to the Pac-10 women's singles crown is up for grabs.
The Women of Troy could come away from the Pac-10 action with two singles crowns, in fact. In addition to Nelson's appearance in the main tournament singles championship match, senior Julie Smekodub has streaked her way into the final of the invitational singles draw. Smekodub toppled Stanford's Lejla Hodzic 7-5, 6-1 in today's invitational semifinal, putting her up against Arizona State's Laila Abdala in Sunday's 8 a.m. final.
In doubles competition, Judy DeVera and Amanda Fink's winning run was tripped up in the semifinals of tournament play with an 8-5 loss to UCLA's Schnack Zalameda, closing out the women's action in Ojai on Saturday.
