LOS ANGELES - The USC women's cross country team will be in action on Friday (Oct. 19) at the CS Fullerton Titan Invitational 5K race at 4:30 p.m. in Fullerton, Calif. The 12-team invitational is the final regular season race for the Women of Troy before next week's Pac-10 Championships to be hosted by Oregon State.
USC cross country coach Tom Walsh will rest freshmen Sarah Cocco and Zsofia Erdelyi as well as sophomores Bridget Helgerson and Chanel Fischetti for this race in preparation for next week. Cocco won the only two races she competed in this season and Erdelyi won the UCSD Triton Invitational on Oct. 6, her last race.
"The training has been going very well for those four runners and they are on schedule to run well at the Pac-10s next week," said Walsh. "This is a good chance for Laura (Meyers). She has really improved in practice the last three weeks and I'm looking for it to show up in the race this week and next. She is going in the right direction as we head into the Pac-10s. I think she can finish in the top five on Friday at Fullerton."
Joining the senior captain Meyers in running at the Titan Invitational for USC will be freshman Brianna Bentley, freshman Kristin Byrne, junior Taylor Carroll, sophomore Katherine Ellis, freshman Zara Lukens, junior Allison Spies and sophomore Jennifer Wells.
"This race is a chance for those (runners) going to the Pac-10s to show how much they have improved at both racing and competing," said Walsh. "Our sixth and seventh spots for the Pac-10 Championships will be decided in this meet. Taylor, Katherine, Zara and Brianna all will be competing for the last two spots on our roster for the Pac-10s."
Carroll has been battling an IT band injury and has been working hard to be ready for the Titan Invitational, but whether she runs or not at this meet will be a last minute decision.
The Trojans placed fourth at the Titan Invitational in 2006 and are looking to do a little better this year. "We want to get into the top three at this meet," said Walsh. USC's top competition figures to come from UC Irvine, Long Beach State and the Cal Coast Track Club.
