IRVINE, Calif. - Four pitchers limited No. 22 USC to a season-low three hits Tuesday as the UC Irvine Anteaters shut out the Trojans, 5-0, in non conference action at Anteater Ballpark. Glenn Swanson (4-3) earned the win by throwing four perfect innings to start the game.
UC Irvine (22-16) swept the two-game season series as USC fell to 22-17 on the season.
Gary Dudrey led the Anteaters with a 3-for-4 night and two RBI. Jaime Martinez hit an RBI single in the first to give UCI the 1-0 lead. Martinez reached on a Blake Sharpe error in the fourth, moved to second on a passed ball and scored later on Danny McCarthy's RBI single.
UCI added a run in the sixth and two in the eighth for the win. The Trojans did not get a hit until the seventh when Cyle Hankerd led off with a single.
USC returns to Pac-10 Conference play this weekend against Washington at Dedeaux Field. The Trojans, currently in first place by a half-game over Arizona State and Oregon State, start the series with the Huskies on Friday at 6 p.m. with 1 p.m. starts on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's game will be the "Salute To Rod" tribute to former USC head coach Rod Dedeaux with ceremonies starting at 12:20 p.m. All three games of the Washington series will be broadcast live, along with live video, on usctrojans.com.
