In top-ranked USC's conference home opener, the Trojans broke out of a tight third quarter and left No. 8 Long Beach State behind on the way to a 13-9 win in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation competition Saturday at McDonald Swim Stadium.
Once again, USC's all-time leading scorer Juraj Zatovic topped all scorers with his second straight five-goal game. He had help, of course, with Juan Delgadillo and Tommy Corcoran both firing in a pair of goals, and four other Trojans got in on the scoring action.
USC built up a 5-3 lead at halftime, but Long Beach State climbed back and took a 6-5 lead midway through the third quarter. The Trojans put a stop to that surge, however, and worked their way back ahead to hold a 10-7 edge going into the final period.
The win moves the Trojans to 15-1 overall and 2-0 in MPSF play. Long Beach State is now 5-10 and 0-2.
