TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Jez Ratliff scored the game-winner in the 61st minute Sunday as the No. 5 Florida State Seminoles defeated the USC Trojans, 2-1, in Nike Seminole Classic action at Seminole Soccer Complex. Florida State (2-0) avenged its similar 2-1 loss to the Women of Troy last year in Tallahassee. The game was delayed for over two hours with eight minutes remaining after a nearby thunderstorm stopped play. USC (1-1) had a 1-0 lead at halftime after Kelly Blais scored on a header in front. With a free kick just outside the penalty box on the left side, Rosa Anna Tantillo chipped to the near post where Blais put in the Trojans' lone goal of the game. The Women of Troy gave it back in the second half when a foul in the box gave Florida State a penalty kick. Katie Beal put it away to tie the game for the Seminoles. Ratliff scored on a play set up by Leah Gallegos, who worked her dribble on the endline. Gallegos fed Ratliff in front of a wide open net for the game-winner. The Women of Troy will open its 2004 home schedule next weekend against Hawaii on Friday (Sept. 3) at 3 p.m. at McAlister Field. Hawaii features Natasha Kai, who led the nation last year in scoring with 29 goals.
