MADISON, Wisc. - For the second-straight day, the USC women's tennis team endured a difficult loss, falling to 45th-ranked BYU, 6-1, in the consolation round of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship on Friday morning at A.C. Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wisc. With the loss, the Women of Troy drop to 4-2 on the season, while the Cougars improve to 7-2.
The fifth-ranked Women of Troy, who fell to No. 25 Texas A&M in Thursday's tournament opener, will take on 13th-ranked Kentucky to complete play on Saturday.
BYU won all three doubles matches to capture the first point of the match.
After dropping her doubles match with partner Carine Vermeulen at center court, USC's 24th-ranked Luana Magnani was forced to withdraw from singles play with an aggravated shoulder injury. As a result, the Women of Troy lineup had to play singles without Magnani at No. 1.
The Cougars quickly captured victories at the No. 4 and 6 spots to go ahead 3-0 in the match. Freshman Anca Anastasiu managed to hold off the loss for one more match as she defeated BYU's Sofia Holden at No. 2, 6-4, 7-5. The Cougars eventually clinched the victory with a 7-5, 6-1 win at center court.
