LOS ANGELES - Nat Gonzalez, formerly the head men's coach at UC Riverside, was named an assistant with the USC women's soccer program, Women of Troy head coach Jim Millinder announced today.
Gonzalez replaces Neil Sedgwick, who took the head coaching job at Montana earlier this month.
Gonzalez spent the last three seasons guiding the men at UC Riverside to a 12-36-8 record with the Highlanders.
"I think Nat is an exceptional coach and will do a great job here at USC," said Millinder. "He brings a wealth of talent in the goalkeeping area as well as experience as a head coach. His knowledge of the game is tremendous."
Prior to his tenure at UC Riverside, Gonzalez served as goalkeeping coach and first assistant for the men's team at Washington (1996-2000). The Huskies won the 1998 and 1999 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships and posted a 61-15-5 record during his five years with the Huskies. He was an assistant men's coach at Cal Poly Pomona from 1995-96 and a graduate assistant coach for the UCLA women's team from 1994-95.
Gonzalez graduated from Chaffey High School in Ontario in 1988. He was a four-year letterwinner and goalkeeper at UCLA from 1988-91 and a member of the 1990 Bruins' national championship team. He earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from UCLA in 1995 and possesses a United States Soccer Federation "B" license.
He also played professionally for six seasons in the Major Indoor Soccer League, finishing his career with the Seattle SeaDogs in 1997.
The Women of Troy are coming off an 9-8-4 season, including the program's sixth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and a third-place finish in the Pac-10 Conference.
