LOS ANGELES - Kyle Boyer went 4-for-5 with a grand slam and four RBI Sunday and the No. 5 Cal State Fullerton Titans defeated the USC Trojans, 11-3, in non-conference action at Dedeaux Field. Dustin Miller and Sean Martin shut down the Trojans before USC scored all three of its runs in the ninth off Chad Cordero.
Miller (4-1) went six innings, scattering seven hits with a walk and seven strikeouts for the Titans, who improved to 18-4 overall. Martin threw two scoreless innings in relief. Brian Bannister (3-3) took the loss for USC (11-11), allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.
In the first, USC had the bases loaded with one out before Miller struck out Joey Metropoulos and retired Jon Brewster on a fielder's choice. Richie Burgos put the Titans ahead in the top of the second with a solo home run to right, his first of the season.
An error by Trojan shortstop Anthony Lunetta put runners at first and second in the fifth before Shane Costa delivered a three-run homer to right, his second of the season, for a 4-0 lead. Boyer put the game away in the sixth with his grand slam to right off Al Benavente for a 9-0 advantage. It was Boyer's second of the season.
Saturday's game between the two teams, which had been rained out, has been rescheduled for Monday (May 5) at 7 p.m. The game will still be played at Edison International Field, home of the world champion Anaheim Angels.
USC travels to San Diego on Tuesday (March 18) for a 2 p.m. game before opening Pac-10 Conference play next Friday (March 21) at Arizona at 7 p.m. All games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
