IRVINE, Calif. --- No. 2 UC Irvine scored twice in the first and third quarters and went on to defeat No. 3 USC, 4-2, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's water polo action at the Anteater Aquatics Complex Sunday.
A power-play goal by sophomore Dreason Barry at 5:39 of the first quarter opened the scoring and senior Jeff Powers netted a natural goal with three seconds remaining in the period to give UCI a 2-0 lead. Senior Jordan Hewko put the Trojans on the board with an extra-man goal at 5:40 in the second quarter for the only score of that period.
Junior Phil Garcia scored for UCI in a 6-on-5 situation at 5:03 of the third quarter and junior Garrett Gentry scored a natural goal with 1:03 left for a 4-1 Anteater margin heading into the final quarter. USC sophomore James Shin scored with 2:22 left in the fourth period and the Anteater defense held off a USC power-play opportunity in the final minute.
Goalie Doug Finfrock had eight saves for UCI, which improved to 11-6 overall and 2-2 in the MPSF. Junior Bozidar Damjanovic recorded 15 saves, including 13 in the first half, for the Trojans, who fell to 14-5 overall and 3-2 in the MPSF.
USC plays a non-conference match at Loyola Marymount next Friday (Nov. 1) and will host Pacific in an MPSF match on Saturday (Nov. 2) at noon.
