Washington State redshirt sophomore Ellannee Richardson won the heptathlon with a season-best 5,578 points and Oregon junior Saniago Lorenzo claimed the decathlon with 7617 points at the Pac-10 Multi-Event Championships Sunday at Edwards Stadium. Richardson's victory gave the Cougars their first-ever conference heptathlon title.
Whitney Evans of WSU, the first day leader, finished second with 5,546 points, while Stanford's Julie Tinker, who finished fifth a year ago, placed third with 5,432. Cal junior Shawna Adkins, who was competing in only her second ever heptathlon, finished fourth with a career-best 5,050.
Evans held a 12-point lead over Richardson heading into the final event - the 800m. Richardson surpassed her teammate with the 871 points she earned for her victory in the 800m (2:16.58). Richardson won two of the three events on the final day, grabbing the javelin with a PR of 143-2 (previous best: 125-3). She led after the first event - the 100mH - and didn't regain the lead until the conclusion of the competition.
The WSU one-two finish puts it in first place in the women's team race with 18 points heading into the main portion of the Pac-10 Championships next weekend.
After starting the day slowly with sub-PR performances in the long jump and javelin, Adkins recorded her fourth PR of the competition in the 800m (2:19.68), which proved to be her second-best event in terms of points (828). On day one, Adkins posted PRs in the 100mH (14.84 ht), shot put (38-6.25) and 200m (25.87).
After finishing runner-up the last two years to Cal's Bevan Hart, Lorenzo led wire-to-wire, as he garnered his first Pac-10 decathlon crown. He was consistent throughout championship, garnering first place in the 400m yesterday and finishing no lower than fourth in any event.
Stanford's Jason Goff placed second with 7,428 points, and Oregon's Billy Pappas took third with 7,342. Cal junior Matt Blair posted 7,099 points to finish sixth for the second-straight year at the league meet. After a somewhat disappointing start, Blair wrapped up the meet with PRs in the javelin (175-5, 4th place) and the 1500m (4:32.87, 2nd).
Oregon enters the second weekend of competition (May 19-20) as the men's leader with 16 points on the strength of Lorenzo's and Pappas' performances in the decathlon.

Heptathlon Quotes -
Shawna Adkins, California
"On paper, I was hoping for a 5,200, but the long jump and the javelin didn't go half as well as I wanted. I came up really short. My goal coming in was to qualify for nationals, and 5200 was provisional, so I at least wanted to get that. I have to keep reminding myself that the first time in fourth place is really good. But it wasn't about place, it was about points. But I'm happy, don't get me wrong."
Ellannee Richardson, Washington State
"I was happy with my performance. I didn't do very well my first day, but I think I came back out here and did a lot better today. I was out with a back injury last year, so I redshirted. This is my second hep of the year. I improved from the first one I did earlier this year. There's no doubt about that. I was happy to be out here competing again."
"We (Richardson and WSU's Whitney Evans) both knew that it was going to be close and that it was going to come down to the 800. We were going to have to battle it out."
Decathlon Quotes -
Santiago Lorenzo, Oregon
"I needed to stay within 35 seconds of the Stanford guy (Jason Goff in the 1500m). So, that was not going to be a problem. I was runner-up two years in a row. This year was my turn, I guess. Bevan Hart graduated and left the field open. I'm really happy. It was something I had to win because I was number one in the Pac-10. I think my conditioning level is going up day-by-day, so I think I'm going to be ready to rock at nationals at home."
Matt Blair, California
"I'm real disappointed, actually. I think that I was definitely a contender for nationals. Not everyday can go as planned. I was going to come back strong on the second day. I almost fell on the fourth hurdle and it nearly took me out of the competition. So I said I have nothing to lose. I acted like I wanted to be here and wanted to do well. I set a decathlon PR in the pole vault and had another PR in the javelin and I got a 12-second PR in the 1500. You wish you could go and take back certain events and do them over again. But you can't. You have to live with them."
