HOUSTON, Tex. - Freshman Fraser Dizard registered his first collegiate save and the USC Trojans completed a three-game series sweep Sunday with a 4-3 win against the Houston Cougars.
Dizard entered the game in the ninth with two outs and the tying run on second for the Trojans (12-4), who are ranked No. 4 in the nation according to ESPN/USA Today Baseball Weekly and No. 5 in Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball.
Anthony Reyes (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, going six innings and allowing two runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked two batters. Gene Flores (1-2) took the loss for the Cougars (6-12).
With the sweep, the Trojans avenge last year's series sweep by the Cougars at Dedeaux Field. USC now has a four-game winning streak.
Seth Davidson singled with one out in the first in front of a crowd of 803 at Cougar Field. Anthony Lunetta reached on a throwing error by Houston shortstop Keith Ahrens. Back-to-back RBI singles by Josh Persell and Rob Garibaldi gave the Trojans an early 2-0 lead.
The Cougars got on the scoreboard in the sixth. Center fielder Michael Bourn reached on a single and advanced to third on an error by Reyes on a failed pickoff attempt. He scored on a wild pitch by Reyes. With runners at first and second, Reyes got Gabe Lucas to ground out into an inning-ending double play.
USC answered with two runs in the seventh. With the bases loaded and no outs, Garibaldi scored on a walk to Alberto Concepcion and freshman Michael Moon scored when Bill Peavey grounded into a double play. The Cougars scored once in the seventh and the eighth, cutting the Trojans lead to a 4-3 margin.
The Trojans will return home for a non-conference game against UC Riverside on Tuesday (March 6) and an exhibition game against Hosei University in Japan on Wednesday (March 7). Both games will begin at 5 p.m.
USC will then travel to Palo Alto for a non-conference three-game series at Stanford, beginning on Friday (March 9) at 6 p.m. All three games of the series will be broadcast on www.usctrojans.com.
