TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior midfielder and Hermann Award finalist Isabelle Harvey (Cap-Rouge, Quebec, Canada) scored both goals Sunday as the No. 17 USC Trojans defeated the No. 21 Michigan Wolverines, 2-1, in the 2000 Sun Devil Classic. Harvey scored the first goal of the game for the Trojans (3-0) with her first goal of the season at 12:39 off a cross from sophomore Ali Fennell (Santa Ana/Mater Dei HS).
With the score tied 1-1 at halftime, Harvey put in the game-winner (54:27) during a scramble for the ball inside the box. She twirled around and knocked the ball in with her left foot for the gamebreaker from five yards out.
Sophomore Lauren Arase (La Canada/La Canada HS) made five saves for the Trojans and is 3-0 on the season, 10-0 in her career at USC.
"It was a struggle and a battle, but we settled down in the second half," said Head Coach Jim Millinder. "We took a lot better care of the ball in the second half than we did in the first and that allowed us to create chances. We still need to finish our chances, but in this heat, it was a great result."
The Trojans will return home and host the 2000 Fila Challenge next weekend at McAlister Field. The tournament will feature USC, UCLA, Baylor and Vanderbilt. The tournament will begin on Friday (Sept. 8) with UCLA taking on Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. while USC will host Baylor at 3 p.m. On Sunday (Sept. 10), UCLA will face Baylor at noon while USC faces Vanderbilt at 2 p.m. Tickets for the 2000 Fila Challenge are available at the gate or by calling the USC ticket office at (213) 740-GOSC.
