The United State Track Coaches Association has named USC Director of Track and Field Ron Allice the men's West region Coach of the Year, while sophomore sprinter Angela Williams, the two-time NCAA 100-meter champion, has been named the West region's female Athlete of the Year.
For Allice, it was his third such selection in his six years as head coach at USC. During that time, his men's teams have finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships every year (including a third-place finish in 1997). The Trojans have also won three of the last four men's Pac-10 conference championships, including the last two.
Williams, a four-time All-American, chipped in 22.5 team points for USC at the 2000 Pac-10 conference championships. She won both the 100 and 200 meters and led off the Women of Troy's winning 4x100 relay as USC's team finished second to UCLA by the slimmest margin in conference history (166-161). At this year's NCAA meet, Williams repeated as 100-meter champion with a time of 11.12 (she holds the USC and national junior record at 11.04). Williams will next be competing at the U.S. Olympic trials in July.
