LOS ANGELES- - The Women of Troy track and field team is ranked No. 1 in the latest edition of the Trackwire top 20, while the USC men's track team sits atop the latest Team Power Rankings chart. Both listings are widely recognized as the most accurate barometers of the collegiate track and field scene.
Trackwire lists the USC women with 59 points, edging out UCLA's 57 points and LSU's 56. Trackwire cites USC's "great across-the-board talent," that includes defending NCAA 100-meter champ Angela Williams, middle distance runners Brigita Langerholc and Anna Lopaciuch, intermediate hurdler Natasha Danvers and horizontal jumper Tatyana Obukhova, as being the key element in USC's run at its first-ever women's NCAA track and field championship. Trackwire also ranks the USC men's team fifth.
In the men's Team Power Rankings, USC tops the list. The Team Power Rankings is a unique system of ranking teams on the basis of quality of athletic performance, team depth, and dual meet scoring potential. USC had a score of 349.03, ahead of Washington (342.45) and Florida (333.91). The Women of Troy are ranked second to Florida in the women's Team Power Rankings with a score of 327.45.
Both of USC's track teams are fresh off big wins over Nebraska, LSU and North Carolina at last weekend's Centennial Invitational held at Cromwell Field on the USC campus. Both Trojan squads are now 7-0 in dual meet competition and will compete in various meets the next few weeks before facing UCLA in the annual dual meet on May 6 at Drake Stadium in Westwood.
