Women's Tennis To Host Arizona, Arizona State

This Week -- Coming off a disappointing loss to No. 14 UCLA, 5-4, last Wednesday, No. 7 USC (8-3, 2-2 Pac-10) women's tennis will host its second Pac-10 series this week (March 10 & 11) against No. 26 Arizona and No. 10 Arizona State. The Trojans will face the Wildcats at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, and the Sun Devils at noon on Saturday. Both matches will be played at Marks Tennis Stadium.
USC vs. Arizona -- Against the Wildcats, the Trojans own a 28-15 series advantage after a decisive 9-0 victory over the Wildcats on Jan. 29 in Tucson, Ariz. Arizona (6-5, 1-5 Pac-10) dropped two matches in the Bay Area last week, including a 0-7 defeat at Stanford and 1-6 loss at Cal.
USC vs. Arizona State -- Saturday's match will mark the 45th meeting between the Women of Troy and Sun Devils (8-2, 2-1 Pac-10). USC maintains a 28-16 series advantage, despite a 3-6 loss at Arizona State on Jan. 28. The Sun Devils have won the last six of seven matches, including a 5-4 upset over top-ranked Cal last week.
The Trojans' Last Outing -- USC suffered a 5-4 loss to No. 14 UCLA on Wednesday, March 1. The Women of Troy held a 4-2 lead after singles, but dropped all three doubles matches to surrender the upset victory. After a loss at No. 1 singles, USC went on to win the next three consecutive matches at the No. 2, 3, and 4 spots. Freshman Tiffany Brymer then battled it out at No. 6 to earn a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Catherine Hawley, giving USC a two-point advantage in the contest. Both teams fought through the three doubles matches, but it was the Bruins who prevailed with three-straight points. After losses at No. 2 and 3, USC's Brymer and Kara Warkentin challenged Basica and Sara Walker at center court. The score was tied at 5-5 as each team had alternated with the lead. UCLA earned the next three-straight points for the 8-5 win and match victory.
USC News & Notes -- USC advanced to the USTA/ITA championship quarterfinals for the first time since 1997... The Trojans dropped one spot to No. 13 in the Feb. 23 ITA rankings... With the loss to No. 12 ASU, the Women of Troy are 0-1 against ranked opponents... Three of the four Trojans' ranked in the ITA fall rankings are freshman, #38 Peterson, #93 Loyola, #26 Brymer (Doubles)... USC maintained its team ranking, finishing the 1999 season ranked 10th and starting 2000 10th.
Head Coach Richard Gallien -- Richard Gallien enters his fifth season at the helm of the USC women's tennis program. After guiding the 1999 Trojans to a 21-9 overall record, and a quarterfinal appearance at the NCAAs, he was named Pac-10 Co-Coach of the Year. Gallien began his career at Pepperdine, coaching the men's team for three years, before joining the Trojan family. Over the last eight years, he has compiled a 130-72 (.644) overall record and his teams have made four appearances in the NCAA tournament.
