Women of Troy Host Harvard, Travel To UCLA

This Week -- The 7th-ranked USC women's tennis team (12-3, 4-2 Pac-10) jumped one more spot according to this week's Wingspan.com collegiate tennis rankings, after earning a 7-2 victory over Fresno State last Wednesday (March 22). This week, USC will host Harvard on Wednesday (March 29) at 1:30 p.m., and will resume Pac-10 play against No. 9 UCLA on Saturday (April 1) at the LA Tennis Center.
USC vs. Harvard -- Wednesday's match will be USC's seventh all-time meeting with Harvard. The Trojans own a 6-0 record after last defeating the Crimson 5-4 at home on March 30, 1996. Harvard is coming off a 7-2 victory over UC Santa Barbara last Sunday, improving their overall record to 3-5 this season.
USC vs. UCLA -- USC and UCLA will meet for the 52nd time in program history this Saturday. The Trojans own a 30-21 series advantage. Last season, the two teams split victories as USC defeated the Bruins, 6-3, at home, then fell at UCLA, 2-6. With a 10-5 record this season, UCLA is coming off a 7-2 win over Illinois and 5-1 loss against Pepperdine.
The Trojans' Last Outing -- USC tallied a 7-2 victory over No. 27 Fresno State on Wednesday (March 22), putting an end to the Bulldogs' seven-match win streak, while posting their own fourth-straight victory. With a 4-2 lead after the singles matches, Tiffany Brymer and Kara Warkentin clinched the Trojans victory with a 8-4 win over Kim Niggemeyer and Renee Kops-Jones at the No.1 doubles position. The No. 2 and 3 doubles matches followed in their footsteps as USC swept all three with identical scores, 8-4. In singles, USC earned three points in straight sets, and the fourth in a third set tie-breaker when Brymer came from behind to defeat Anke Beier, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 5.
USC News & Notes -- Senior Jacqui Boyd owns the team's longest win streak of the season in dual matches, having won 11-straight singles matches between Jan. 18 and Feb. 26... USC advanced to the USTA/ITA championship quarterfinals for the first time since 1997... With the win over ASU on March 11, the Women of Troy are 2-3 against top-25 opponents this season... Entering the spring schedule, three of the four Trojans' ranked in the ITA fall rankings were freshman, Jewel Peterson, Anita Loyola, Tiffany Brymer (doubles)... USC maintained its team ranking, finishing the 1999 season ranked 10th and starting 2000, 10th.
Head Coach Richard Gallien -- Richard Gallien enters his fifth season at the helm of the USC women's tennis program. After guiding the 1999 Trojans to a 21-9 overall record, and a quarterfinal appearance at the NCAAs, he was named Pac-10 Co-Coach of the Year. Gallien began his career at Pepperdine, coaching the men's team for three years, before joining the Trojan family. Over the last eight years, he has compiled a 134-72 (.650) overall record and his teams have made four appearances in the NCAA tournament.
