Women's Tennis Face Fresno State, San Diego

This Week -- The 8th-ranked USC women's tennis team (11-3, 4-2 Pac-10) jumped four spots to move back into the top-10 according to this week's Wingspan.com collegiate tennis rankings. The Trojans won their third straight with a 6-2 victory over Illinois on Wednesday (March 15). This week, USC will host Fresno State on Wednesday (March 22) at 1:30 p.m., and San Diego on Saturday (March 25) at noon. Both matches will be played at Marks Tennis Stadium.
USC vs. Fresno State -- USC owns a 10-1 series advantage over Fresno State. Last season, the Women of Troy defeated the Bulldogs, 7-2, at home on February 2. Fresno State owns a 9-5 overall record this season after sweeping Pennsylvania, 9-0, at home on March 18.
USC vs. San Diego -- The Trojans have won 13 of 16 matches against San Diego, including a 5-1 victory over the Torreros at the 1999 NCAA Regionals on March 16. This season, San Diego`s Zuzana Lesenarova leads the team at No. 1 as the 2000 ITA Grand Slam champion and National Clay Court Singles champion. The team recently fell to Fresno State, 6-3.
The Trojans' Last Outing -- USC defeated Illinois, 6-2, on Wednesday after sweeping all six singles matches to clinch the victory. The Trojans won five matches in straight sets at the No. 2 through 6 spots. At the No. 1 position, USC senior Kara Warkentin came from behind to defeat Eldina Fazlic, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, after dropping the first set. Sophomore Krissy Hamilton-Heinberg played only her fourth match of the season, earning a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Michelle Webb at No. 6. Illinois posted two points in the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches. The third match was not played.
USC News & Notes -- USC advanced to the USTA/ITA championship quarterfinals for the first time since 1997... With the win over ASU on March 11, the Women of Troy are 2-3 against top-25 opponents this season... Entering the spring schedule, three of the four Trojans' ranked in the ITA fall rankings were freshman, Jewel Peterson, Anita Loyola, Tiffany Brymer (doubles)... USC maintained its team ranking, finishing the 1999 season ranked 10th and starting 2000, 10th.
Head Coach Richard Gallien -- Richard Gallien enters his fifth season at the helm of the USC women's tennis program. After guiding the 1999 Trojans to a 21-9 overall record, and a quarterfinal appearance at the NCAAs, he was named Pac-10 Co-Coach of the Year. Gallien began his career at Pepperdine, coaching the men's team for three years, before joining the Trojan family. Over the last eight years, he has compiled a 133-72 (.649) overall record and his teams have made four appearances in the NCAA tournament.
