LOS ANGELES - Houston third baseman Kris Wilken hit a two-run triple to cap a four-run first inning Saturday as the No. 10 Cougars routed the No. 5 USC Trojans, 14-7, at Dedeaux Field. Wilken added a three-run homer later in the game for a five RBI performance. The Cougars (14-7) have won the first two games of the series and will go for the sweep against the Trojans (12-5) tomorrow at 1 p.m. Houston has won six straight games on the road.
USC starter Rik Currier (4-2) was roughed up for seven runs in only 2 and 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Houston received strong pitching from starter Jerret Sykes (1-1), who replaced the scheduled starter Shane Nance. Nance was injured in yesterday??TMs 3-2 win over the Trojans.
Sykes went five innings and allowed three runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Houston pitchers did not allow a walk while USC surrendered seven walks.
USC reliever Ronald Flores had retired nine straight batters until the sixth inning when right fielder Eric Lee and designated hitter Jarrod Bitter broke a 7-3 game open with back-to-back solo home runs.
Catcher Beau Craig went 2-for-3 for the Trojans with four RBI. Craig hit his seventh home run of the season, a three-run homer, in the eighth inning. Shortstop Seth Davidson went 3-for-4.
