USC-LMU Baseball Game Halted Due To Darkness

LOS ANGELES -- Today's game between No.6-ranked USC and No.16-ranked Loyola Marymount at Page Stadium was halted due to darkness with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning. USC held an 8-7 lead with the Lions at the plate. The game, which had elapsed 3:20, was halted at 5:26 p.m. and will be completed on Mar. 21 when the two teams meet again at Dedeaux Field at 5 p.m.
Game Notes:
USC opened the scoring in the first inning with one run on a sacrifice fly by 2B Anthony Lunetta that plated RF Brian Barre who led off the game with a triple to right field. USC scored again in the second to take a 2-0 lead after DH Aaron Fausett hit an RBI single that scored 3B Justin Gemoll. The Trojans added five runs in the top of the seventh on two home runs to make the score 7-0. Lunetta led off with a walk and later scored on a home run by C Beau Craig. Successive singles by 1B Bill Peavey and RF Rob Garibaldi set the stage for Gemoll who hit a three-run shot that put USC ahead 7-0.
The Lions answered with five runs in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the lead to 7-5, after batting around the order. The frame began with a double by SS Mario Cordero. A single by CF Mike Hymes and Scott Walter reaching after getting hit by a pitch, set up a bases-loaded situation for pinch-hitter Jeff Walker who sparked the Lions with an RBI single to right field. 3B Tommy Perez followed by drawing an RBI walk and RBI singles by David Maffei and LF Rob Hirsh helped the Lions to get within two runs. USC increased its lead to 8-5 in the eighth, adding one run on a RBI single by Garibaldi that plated Lunetta who singled with one out. Battling darkness, the Lions immediately led off the bottom of the eighth with a single by Hymes. 2B Anthony Angel drove a home run to left-center field which cut the Trojan's lead to 8-7. The game was halted following a strikeout by Walter at 5:26 p.m.
