Women's Tennis To Face Pepperdine, Oregon

This Week -- No. 12 USC women's tennis prepares to face top-ranked Pepperdine this week, before traveling to Pac-10 opponent, Oregon. The Women of Troy will host the Waves on Thursday (Feb. 10) at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Tennis Stadium. The Oregon-USC match will be played on Saturday (Feb. 12), at noon in Eugene, Ore.
USC vs. Pepperdine -- USC and Pepperdine will meet for the 36th time in program history on Thursday. In the series, the Women of Troy own a 24-11 advantage, but were defeated by the Waves last season, 3-6, in Malibu. Pepperdine is coming off a 4-3 win over Virginia Commonwealth last Saturday (Feb. 5) to win the Minnesota Court Classic. The team will face UCLA on Tuesday (Feb. 8).
USC vs. Oregon -- In the third Pac-10 match of the season, USC and Oregon will compete for just the fourth time in program history. Last season, the Trojans defeated the Ducks, 5-1, in Eugene, Ore. With a 2-2 overall record (0-2 Pac-10), Oregon defeated Idaho, 8-1, on Saturday (Feb. 5). The Ducks will host UCLA on Friday (Feb. 11).
The Trojans' Last Outing -- Last week, USC swept nonconference opponent Loyola Marymount, 8-0, on Tuesday (Feb. 1). Kara Warkentin, who moved up to the No. 1 position for the match, defeated LMU freshman Jennifer Mitchell, 6-3, 6-3, and Krissy Hamilton-Heinberg, who entered the lineup at the No. 6 spot, defeated Angelina Zsodorovitska, 7-6, 7-6. The Trojans won all six singles matches in two sets, holding a 6-0 lead heading into doubles play. After a win at No. 1 doubles, Anita Loyola and Jacqui Boyd survived a difficult No. 2 match against Mitchell and Holli Freudenberg for a 9-8 victory to complete the match. The final doubles match was never played.
Peterson Represents USC at ITA's -- After claiming the 1999-2000 South Regional Championships (Nov. 15), Jewel Peterson earned an automatic berth to the ITA Intercollegiate Championship (Feb. 3-5), at the Brookhaven Country Club located outside of Dallas, Tex. She was one six freshman competing in this year's women's singles field, and one of four freshman ranked in the Top 10. In the first round of singles competition on Thursday (Feb. 3), Peterson was eliminated by Mira Radu of Mississippi, 3-6, 3-6.
USC News & Notes -- The Trojans dropped two spots to No. 12 in the ITA ranking this week... With the loss to No. 12 ASU, the Women of Troy are 0-1 against ranked opponents... Three of the four Trojans' ranked in the ITA fall rankings are freshman, #4 Peterson, #70 Loyola, #39 Brymer (Doubles)... USC maintained its team ranking, finishing the 1999 season ranked 10th and starting 2000 10th.
Head Coach Richard Gallien -- Richard Gallien enters his fifth season at the helm of the USC women's tennis program. After guiding the 1999 Trojans to a 21-9 overall record, and a quarterfinal appearance at the NCAAs, he was named Pac-10 Co-Coach of the Year. Gallien began his career at Pepperdine, coaching the men's team for three years, before joining the Trojan family. Over the last eight years, he has compiled a 126-70 (.643) overall record and his teams have made four appearances in the NCAA tournament.
