LOS ANGELES -- The USC baseball team, which used a 16-game winning streak last season to make its 20th appearance at the College World Series, was ranked No. 2 in the 2001 preseason poll, released today by Collegiate Baseball. The Trojans were one point out of first place, held by Georgia Tech, the team USC defeated in Atlanta last year in the NCAA Super Regionals to advance to Omaha.
The newspaper also announced the Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American teams, which named USC senior pitcher Rik Currier as a first team preseason All-American and junior pitcher Mark Prior and senior shortstop Seth Davidson as second team preseason All-Americans.
The Trojans return all three starters in their pitching rotation and seven starting position players from a 44-20 squad that went 1-2 in the 2000 College World Series. USC will begin its 2001 season at home on Wednesday (Jan. 31) against Santa Clara at Dedeaux Field at 3 p.m. The Trojans will host its Alumni Game on Saturday (Jan. 27) at 1 p.m.
