Women of Troy Defeat UC Santa Barbara, 6-3

Los Angeles, CA -- The 10th-ranked USC (1-0) women's tennis team opened the 2000 dual-match season with a 6-3 victory over UC Santa Barbara, today (Jan. 18), at Marks Tennis Stadium.
The Women of Troy earned four singles points in the win. At No. 1, senior Veronika Safarova defeated Cindy Ammann, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Jacqui Boyd earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Shannon Wilkins, freshman Anita Loyola defeated Deborah Popkowitz, 6-0, 6-1, and freshman Tiffany Brymer posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jill Katzenberger. Caroline Christian and Trojan walk-on Christina Irinco dropped their matches to Gaby Andrade and Melissa Dillard at the No. 5 and 6 spots.
USC earned two convincing victories in doubles play. Safarova and Loyola teamed for a 8-0 win over Ammann and Wilkins, while Boyd and Brymer defeated Popkowitz and Dillard, 8-5.
The Women of Troy will return to their home court on Thursday, January 20 against UC Irvine. The match will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Marks Tennis Stadium.
