DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 6 USC women's soccer team won its fourth straight match against a ranked opponent on Friday night, beating No. 15 Duke, 2-0, in the Duke Adidas Classic.
The Women of Troy (6-1) own consecutive wins over Portland, UConn, BYU and now Duke. They will look to make it five in a row when they face No. 2 North Carolina on Sunday. The Tar Heels lost to No. 1 Santa Clara, 1-0, in the tournament's opening match.
"Duke is an excellent team so to earn a shutout is a great credit to our defense," USC Coach Jim Millinder said. "I'm proud of the team for earning another big victory for the program. This wasn't an easy road game. It was also an important win with the North Carolina match coming up."
Senior midfielder Kim Clark started the scoring at the 13:55 mark when she picked up her first goal of the season. Clark pressured a Duke defender and knocked down an attempted clearance. She then won the ball and had only the goalkeeper to beat, which she did easily.
USC scored its second goal just before halftime. Freshman midfielder Ali Fennell crossed the ball into the middle from the right side, and it was headed toward the goal by junior midfielder Isabelle Harvey. The header went right to Duke goalkeeper Isis Dallis, who knocked it down but couldn't control it. Freshman forward Jennifer Prigmore slid in and knocked the ball into the net for her team-high fourth goal of the season at the 44:06 mark.
The Blue Devils (5-4) outshot the Women of Troy, 9-7. USC sophomore goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandes made four saves, all in the first half, to earn her third solo shutout of the season.
With Clark's goal and Harvey's assist, both now have 90 career points, just one behind the school record of 91 set by Courtney Barham.
