LOS ANGELES - Three USC coaches -- John Williams, Mark Schubert and Hongping Li -- will be honored by the U.S. Olympic Committee this weekend in Washington D.C. for earning various coach of the year honors.
Williams was named the USOC's National Water Polo Coach of the Year. He led the USC men's water polo team to the program's first-ever NCAA championship in 1998, and he and co-head coach Jovan Vavic were named the National Coaches of the Year by U.S. Water Polo. Williams retired from coaching this past June after 26 years in the position, but will stay with the program as head coach emeritus and in a fund-raising capacity.
Schubert was named the USOC's National Swimming Coach of the Year. Set to begin his seventh season as the coach of both the men's and women's swim programs at Troy, he recently completed a stint as the head men's coach for the U.S. team at the 1999 Pan Pacific Championships in Sydney, Australia. Schubert will also coach America's men's squad at the 2000 Olympics at the same locale.
Hongping Li, who is beginning his first year coaching at USC, was named the USOC's Developmental Diving Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year.
