LOS ANGELES - Recently retired USC men's water polo coach John Williams picked up another highlight in what has been a banner 12 months, as he has been named National Water Polo Coach of the Year by the U.S. Olympic Committee.
He will be recognized in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 16-18, along with coaches from other USOC sports who will also be honored.
Williams led the USC men's water polo team to the program's first-ever NCAA championship in 1998, and he and co-head coach Jovan Vavic were named the National Coaches of the Year by U.S. Water Polo.
Williams retired from coaching this past June, but will stay with the program as head coach emeritus and in a fund-raising capacity.
The Trojan water polo program has continued to have great success, as the women's team (which Williams helped start and is coached by Vavic) won the 1999 national championship in May and the Trojan men's club team won the Summer National Championships earlier this month.
