LOS ANGELES - Junior lefthander Barry Zito and senior outfielder Jason Lane of the USC baseball team were named to the USA Today Baseball Weekly All-American first team today. It was the first All-American team announced in 1999.
Zito, USC's No. 1 starter, is 11-2 with a 3.46 ERA and has 141 strikeouts in 96 1/3 innings. He has won 10 straight starts, including an 8-0 mark in eight Pac-10 starts. He is only the third Pac-10 pitcher in the last 11 years to win all of his possible conference starts.
Lane, the starting leftfielder, is batting .365 with 19 home runs and 66 RBI (all team highs). He missed the first eight games of the season with a broken thumb, but returned to lead the Trojans out of their slow start. His 19 home runs are tied for No. 5 on USC's single-season list.
USC closed the regular season with a 33-23 overall record and a 17-7 Pac-10 mark, good for second place. The Trojans will host an NCAA Regional Tournament on May 28-30.
It's the second straight year USC has had two All-American first teamers on the USA Today Baseball Weekly first team. Last year, Seth Etherton and Jack Krawczyk were honored.
