USC Scrimmage Features TD Passes by Palmer, Van Raaphorst

LOS ANGELES -- Quarterbacks Carson Palmer and Mike Van Raaphorst threw touchdown passes and tailbacks Sultan McCullough and Frank Strong ran for scores to highlight a 56-play intrasquad scrimmage by the USC football team in front of 2,000 fans on Saturday (April 10) at the annual Trojan Huddle during spring drills at Howard Jones Field on campus.
Palmer, a sophomore who started USC's last 5 games of 1998, completed 7-of-11 passes for 138 yards overall, including a 39-yard scoring toss to wide receiver R. Jay Soward. Van Raaphorst, a junior who started USC's first 8 games of 1998, was 5-of-6 for 77 yards overall, including a 14-yard TD to tailback Jabari Jackson.
McCullough, a redshirt freshman, scored on a 10-yard run and gained 99 yards on 13 carries overall. Strong rushed for 19 yards on 7 carries, including a 1-yard TD. Returning starting tailback Chad Morton gained 23 yards on 2 carries in limited action, while fellow senior tailback Petros Papadakis had 56 yards on 3 tries.
Senior wide receiver Windrell Hayes caught 5 passes for 113 yards, while Soward had 2 receptions for 48 yards.
Junior safety Darnell Lacy led all tacklers with 6 stops, while senior linebacker John Fox, who started at quarterback in 1997, had 5 stops and forced a fumble. Sophomore linebacker Lonnie Ford, a converted tight end, had a pair of sacks for minus 12 yards.
The only other score came on a 33-yard field goal by junior placekicker David Bell.
The scrimmage was marred by 16 penalties, including 10 by the offense.
"Except for the fact that we lost our poise too many times and had far too many penalties, I was delighted with the scrimmage," said second-year USC head coach Paul Hackett. "Our running attack was particularly good and I liked the defense's ability to hang in there. Overall, I liked the effort and enthusiasm."
USC, which concludes spring practice on April 23, opens its 1999 season on Sept. 4 at Hawaii.
