LOS ANGELES - Sophomore midfielder Isabelle Harvey's goal off of a deflection in the 37th minute led the USC women's soccer team to a 1-0 upset over No. 18 Baylor, 1-0, in the first game of the Fila Challenge at UCLA's Spaulding Field on Friday night.
No. 25 UCLA and No. 12 Nebraska square off in the second game tonight, and then the venue shifts to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Sunday (Sept. 20) as UCLA meets Baylor at 11 a.m. and USC plays Nebraska at 1 p.m.
The Women of Troy improved to 3-2, with all three of their wins by shutout. The Bears lost their first game of the season and fell to 5-1.
Junior midfielder Kim Clark made a long pass across the field to Harvey, who beat one defender down the left side, then took a shot that was deflected by another Baylor defender and into the goal.
It was a well-defended game with few good scoring chances. USC took 13 shots compared to Baylor's six.
The Bears best opportunity may have come in the 70th minute, when junior forward Courtney Saunders tried to chip a ball over USC goalkeeper Karin Puccinelli from about 20 yards out, but lifted it over the net.
Puccinelli made three saves in the shutout, while Baylor sophomore goalkeeper Dawn Greathouse had six saves.
