LOS ANGELES - Sophomore forward Megan Orach's goal in the 74th minute -- her first of the season -- lifted the USC women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over No. 15 Stanford at the Coliseum on Friday afternoon.
The Women of Troy improved to 7-6-1 overall and 1-2 in the Pacific-10 Conference. It was USC's fourth win over a ranked team in 1998. The Cardinal, ranked No. 15 by Soccer Times, dropped to 7-4-2, 1-2.
Orach's goal broke a 1-1 tie. Sophomore midfielder Isabelle Harvey's corner kick from the right side went right to freshman forward Christy Callier at the far post, who headed it to Orach, who knocked it in.
Orach had eight goals as a 1997 freshman but was scoreless through the first 13 games of 1998.
The Cardinal had a couple of chances late in the game to tie the score, most notably on senior midfielder Tracye Lawyer's shot from 35 yards out that hit the crossbar in the 85th minute.
"We put up a great fight," USC Coach Jim Millinder said. "This is the type of result that we're capable of. We have just have to keep coming with the kind of effort that we had today. Today was a great step forward. This was a special win."
Stanford scored first in the 20th minute when a USC defender tried to head a ball out of the box, but it instead went right to Lawyer, who blasted it in from 15 yards out.
But USC tied the game, 1-1, in the 33rd minute. Junior defender Christina Kushnir's free kick from midfield found sophomore midfielder Andrea Warner (who had entered the game as a sub just two minutes prior) in the box. Warner then kicked it just inside the left post.
USC hosts California on Sunday (Oct. 18) at the Coliseum at 1 p.m.
