PLEASANT HILL, Calif. - The No. 1 USC men's water polo team, behind three goals from both sophomore driver George Csaszar and junior two-meter man Peter Janov, outlasted No. 5 California, 9-8, in overtime, on Sunday at Diablo Valley College.
USC improved to 19-1 overall and 6-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Bears fell to 11-9, 4-4.
Tied at 7-7 after regulation, Trojan freshman two-meter man Ivan Babic gave USC a one-point lead after the first overtime period with his only score of the game. California's Spencer Dorin evened the score with 1:20 left in the second overtime, but Janov connected on the game-winner from two meters out with a minute to play. The Bears had a man-up advantage for the final 35 seconds, but couldn't break through the Trojan defense to tie the match.
USC led 3-1 in the second period, but California answered with three straight to take a 4-3 lead at intermission. Both sides put up two points in the third period and the Bears went up 7-5 with 3:26 remaining in the game on an Albert Won score. The Trojans rallied and tied the match on a Janov score with 35 seconds to go in regulation.
USC junior goalie Richard McEvoy had six saves.
