Warkentin Wins Consolation Title at ASU Tournament

TEMPE, Ariz. - USC women's tennis player Kara Warkentin battled back to win the consolation title at the Arizona State Tournament over the weekend.
Warkentin and Jacqui Boyd, both juniors, traveled to the season-opening tournament.
Warkentin lost her first-round match to Kaysie Smashey of Texas, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, but rallied to win four matches in the consolation event.
She beat Shannon Taheny of Purdue (6-4, 6-1), Anira Kurimay of California (7-5, 6-2), Ahn Nguyen of Pepperdine (6-3, 6-2) and Lisa Walgenbach of Purdue (7-6, 7-6).
Boyd won her first-round match in the main draw, beating Arizona's Joanna Buczkowska (6-4, 2-6, 6-4), but then lost to ASU's Erin DeVera (6-2, 6-2).
She then went into an eight-person consolation bracket with the other second-round losers, where she beat Allison Bradshaw of ASU (6-1, 6-4), then lost to Rebekah Forney of Texas (6-2, 6-4).
The two teamed up to compete in doubles as well, winning a first-round match against Stringer-Allegae of Arizona (9-8), but losing to Kurimay-Curran of Cal (8-1).
