June 21, 1999 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES - The No. 17 Cal State Fullerton baseball team ended No. 2 USC's 11-game winning streak, 7-4, in a nonconference game on Wednesday night at Dedeaux Field.
The Trojans are now 27-6 overall, while the Titans improve to 23-11.
Fullerton took the lead for good in the top of the third inning. Trailing 1-0 with one out, freshman 2B David Bacani walked, went to second on a balk and to third on a wild pitch. He scored when junior DH Greg Jacobs reached base on an error. After the second out, junior 1B Kevin Duck and junior 3B Ryan Moore had RBI singles to make it 3-1.
The Titans had a 5-2 lead entering the bottom of the fourth, but senior 2B Wes Rachels had an RBI sacrifice fly and freshman SS Seth Davidson had an RBI single to make it 5-4. USC wouldn't score again, however, as three Titan relievers limited the Trojans to just one hit over the final five innings. Junior RHP Marco Hanlon (1-2) got the win and senior LHP Benito Flores earned his first save.
Bacani and Moore each had three hits for Cal State Fullerton, while USC had two hits apiece from Rachels and senior CF Jeff DePippo.
USC hosts top-ranked Stanford for a three-game series at Dedeaux Field on April 3-5.
