Trojans Fall to ASU in Offensive Battle

TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 15 USC baseball team fell to No. 19 Arizona State baseball team, 16-10, as the Sun Devils scored in every inning but one in front of 2,544 fans at Packard Stadium on Sunday.
USC (28-20, 14-4 Pac-10) fell into a first-place tie in the Pac-10 with Stanford. ASU improved to 33-17, 9-9.
The Trojans were again led by Jason Lane. Lane, for the second consecutive day, hit two home runs. Lane finished the day 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI. In the ninth inning for USC, Brad Ticehurst hit a monster home run over the wall in center field, only the 17th player ever to accomplish that feat.
Trojan relief pitcher Steve Smyth (6-8) picked up the loss, pitching 2 1/3 innings and giving up four hits, three runs and two walks.
The Devils began the game scoring two runs in each of the first four innings.
In the top of the fifth, the Trojans then put up a five spot and scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead from the Devils, 9-8.
ASU answered with a huge inning of their own, scoring six runs in the sixth.
USC next hosts Pepperdine on Tuesday (April 27) at 7 p.m.
