CORVALLIS, Ore. - Both nine innings and one day weren't enough for USC and Oregon State, as Saturday's Pacific- 10 Conference baseball game was suspended due to rain and darkness with a 10-10 tie heading into the top of the 10th frame.
It took four hours and 17 minutes to play nine innings, and the rain got harder as the game progressed. The game will be picked up at the start of the top of the 10th inning on Sunday at 11:30 a.m., followed by the finale of the three-game series. USC won Friday's opener, 5-2.
The Trojans had an 8-2 lead after batting in the top of the sixth. But the Beavers scored seven runs on five hits off three USC pitchers to take a 9-8 lead after six innings.
It stayed that way until the top of the ninth, when USC scored twice to grab a 10-9 lead. Junior pinch-hitter Carlos Casillas led off the inning with a solo home run to right-center field. Then, the Trojans put runners on first and second with one out, and junior C Eric Munson lined an RBI single to right field.
But in the bottom of the ninth, OSU senior SS Troy Schader's solo home run tied the game at 10- 10. After the next two outs were recorded, the umpires suspended the contest.
Sophomore LHP Steve Smyth started for the Trojans and went a solid 5 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, four walks, four runs (three earned) with eight strikeouts, but the bullpen couldn't hold on to his lead.
Junior 3B Justin Gemoll is 3-for-5 and Munson and senior OF Greg Hanoian each have two hits for the Trojans.
