LOS ANGELES - Senior 3B G.J. Raymundo went 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBI to lead top-seeded Pepperdine over third-seeded Virginia Commonwealth, 12-5, on Saturday night at Dedeaux Field, allowing the Waves to advance out of the losers' bracket and into Sunday's championship game in NCAA Regional play.
Pepperdine (45-15) will need to defeat USC twice on Sunday to advance to next weekend's super regional. The first game is at noon, with a second game (if necessary) starting one hour after the first game's completion.
VCU went 1-2 in the regional and completes the season with a 41-20 record.
After VCU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Pepperdine scored two in the bottom half of the inning and four in the second inning to grab a 6-1 lead that was never seriously threatened. Raymundo's three-run blast came in the second inning and was his 16th home run of the season.
The Waves continued to roll, scoring three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 12-1 lead before VCU countered with four runs in the top of the sixth.
Pepperdine freshman LF Woody Cliffords went 4-for-4 with three RBI and sophomore CF Austin Evans went 3-for-5. Senior RHP Brad Tucker (9-3) went five strong innings, striking out four while giving up three hits, two walks and one run, to pick up the win.
VCU was led by sophomore DH Jason Dubois, who went 2-for-3 and hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
