LOS ANGELES - Freshman C Beau Craig hit his first collegiate home run and had five RBI to spark the No. 22 USC baseball team to an 11-1 victory over UC Santa Barbara in a non-conference game on Tuesday evening at Dedeaux Field.
The Trojans (24-17) have won nine of their last 10 games. The Gauchos dropped to 20-16.
USC scored eight runs in the first two innings en route to the win. In the bottom of the first, sophomore SS Seth Davidson walked, senior LF Jason Lane had an RBI double and senior 2B Dominic Correa had an RBI single to make it 2-0.
The Trojans followed with six runs on six hits in the bottom of the second. Craig hit a two-run double, senior RF Greg Hanoian and Correa had RBI singles and senior DH Justin Lehr had a two-RBI single.
In the meantime, sophomore LHP Steve Smyth (6-6) held the Gauchos scoreless in his five innings of work and earned the victory. He gave up four hits and zero walks while striking out two. Four Trojan relievers each pitched an inning.
Craig made it 11-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning when he blasted a three-run home run high over the right field wall. Craig, Correa and Lane each had two hits for the Trojans.
The Gauchos broke up the shutout in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by freshman 3B Chris Willmer.
UCSB freshman DH Tyler Von Schell had two hits. Junior LHP Troy Kinto (2-3) started but lasted only 1 1/3 innings, giving up six runs, and took the loss.
USC visits Stanford this weekend (April 16-18) in a three-game series between the top two teams in the conference.
