No. 22 Trojans Fall to LMU, 9-4

LOS ANGELES - The Loyola Marymount baseball team pounded out 17 hits, most coming in the late innings, and defeated No. 22 USC, 9-4, in a non-conference game on Wednesday at Dedeaux Field. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was rained out.
The Trojans fell to 20-17 overall. The Lions improved to 20-14 and swept the two-game season series.
LMU took a 2-0 lead after four innings, though USC tied it in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore C Josh Persell hit a two- run single up the middle.
But the Lions exploded for four runs on five hits in the top of the sixth, then added three runs on five hits in the top of the seventh to take a 9-2 lead. During one stretch over the two innings, 13 Lion batters collected nine hits.
In the top of the sixth, sophomore RF Ryan Beaver had an RBI single, freshman 3B Tommy Perez had a two-run single and freshman 2B Gabe Lopez had a run-scoring groundout. In the top of the seventh, senior 1B Curt Fiore had a two-RBI single and senior DH Joe Sulentor drove in a run with a single.
USC scored once in both the eighth and ninth innings, as senior 1B Jason Lane had an RBI double and senior C Oscar Casillas had an RBI single, respectively, but the Trojans failed to close the gap any further.
The Trojans used nine pitchers, and sophomore RHP Shaun Kramer (0-2) took the loss in relief. The Lions used five pitchers and held the Trojans to seven hits. Junior LHP Ben Bonilla (3-4) went two innings and picked up the victory in relief.
Four Lions had three hits each: Beaver, junior CF Matt Riordan, freshman LF Kris Zacuto and sophomore C Scott Walter. USC senior RF Greg Hanoian continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-3 effort.
USC hosts California in a three-game Pacific-10 Conference series this weekend (April 9-11), beginning with a 7 p.m. contest on Friday.
