LOS ANGELES - Senior driver Marko Pintaric scored three goals to help lead the No. 1 USC men's water polo team to a 13-8 victory over No. 4 California in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at McDonald's Swim Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans (10-0 overall, 3-0 in the MPSF) were supported by a strong defense, as they held the Bears (5-3, 1-2) scoreless in the first half. Driver Allen Basso and 2-meter man James Castle, both juniors, also helped USC's offensive effort by scoring two goals apiece, including one two-pointer by Castle.
The Trojans led 7-0 at the half, but the Bears erupted for four goals, two by sophomore driver Eldad Hazor, in the third quarter, closing the gap to 10-4.
USC regained the momentum by scoring three straight goals by three different Trojans to open the fourth quarter. The Bears scored four late goals but still fell short.
Driver Ryan Flynn, a senior from Los Angeles, led California in scoring with three points.
USC next takes part in the Northern California Tournament, hosted by Stanford, on Oct. 17-18.
