NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The quest for a third straight Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament title came to an end on Saturday for the USC men's water polo team in a 7-6 overtime loss to Stanford.
The loss came in the semifinals of the tournament and dropped the Trojans (22-3) into Sunday's third-place game against UC Irvine. It will be at 1 p.m. at Newport Harbor High School.
Stanford's Andy Walburger scored with 37 seconds left in the second overtime period to give the Cardinal the victory.
George Csaszar had three goals for USC. Ivan Babic's goal tied the game at 6-6 with 4:08 to play in the fourth quarter.
USC is still in the running to receive the at-large bid for the NCAA Championships. Stanford and Pepperdine will play for the conference title and the automatic bid on Sunday.
