Lehr, Lane Help Baseball to Sweep of Cal

LOS ANGELES - Senior RHP Justin Lehr pitched eight strong innings and senior LF Jason Lane had three hits and three RBI as the No. 22 USC baseball team defeated California, 6-2, in a Pacific-10 Conference game on Monday afternoon at Dedeaux Field. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday but was rained out.
USC (23-17 overall, 10-2 Pacific-10 Conference) swept the three-game series from California (15-25, 4-8).
Lehr (5-1) won for his fifth straight start and improved to 4-0 after four Pac-10 starts. In his eight innings, he gave up five hits, two runs and four walks and struck out seven.
With the game tied, 1-1, entering the bottom of the fourth inning, Lane lined a double into left field, scoring two runs and giving the Trojans a 3-1 lead.
The Golden Bears opened up the top of the sixth inning with three straight hits, including an RBI double by sophomore IF Clint Hoover, to make it 3-2. But Lehr came back to get the next three outs and strand runners on second and third.
In the bottom of the sixth, USC sophomore SS Seth Davidson (who also had three hits) doubled, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on senior RF Greg Hanoian's sacrifice fly. The Trojans closed out the scoring in the bottom of the eighth with two runs, one coming on an RBI single through the left side by Lane.
Cal sophomore LHP Jason Dennis (2-6) pitched his second complete game in the loss. He struck out a career-high 10. Junior 2B Tommy Callen had two hits for California.
The game was played in a steady rain for the first few innings, but the weather improved as the game progressed.
USC next hosts UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday (April 13) at 5 p.m.
